   July 2008

It’s a hot dry season folks, with bursts of unexpected downpours. Feisty Mars leaves wet Cancer for dry, fastidious Virgo on July 1st. He meets up with stern Saturn just ten days later reminding us that our dollars will only stretch so far and our sunscreen only covers so much. Conditions are ripe for fires and concern over the exhausted warriors who battle those blazes. Communicator Mercury is running smoothly full steam ahead. We’ve got the cosmic green light to move forward, and, as long as we are prudent and sensible we’ll enjoy the process.

The month opens with the Sun in loving Cancer. This homey energy reminds us that we all have a home somewhere, even if we are not happy with it, or have lost it somehow through crisis or family trauma.  This is one of the reasons Cancer holds tremendous emotions.  No matter how big, bold, and successful we become, the roots that Cancer provides runs deep in our veins. We need to feel loved and to give love and that is what Cancer is all about. It’s the energy of home, mother, food, and feelings. Cancer people often cope with inexplicable moods bought upon by the shifts of their ruling planet the Moon. There’s no one more up and fun than a Cancer feeling good, and no one more down than a Cancer feeling bad. Cancer men have a particularly hard time dealing with the vagaries of this sign. In order to manage their fluctuating emotions, not appropriate for men in our culture, they may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. The King of Cups in the Tarot deck is surely a Cancer male. He is surrounded by watery creatures from the deep sea and his eyes are blue and melancholy. He may be musical and sensitive, ready to listen to your feelings while he struggles with his own.

Both male and female Cancers make wonderful parents – if they can let their children be themselves. Cancer, though it is a sign of leadership and can display tremendous strength, sometimes has a hard time saying what it needs to. Thus Cancers may emotionally manipulate those nearest and dearest to them. Guilt is a powerful tool in the hands of an angry Cancer, as are cutting words that hurt the heart. It’s hard to get away from a clinging Cancer, but the love they give is so warm, smells of baking bread, and heals the heart, who would want to get away?

So we enter July with feelings running rampant. There’s just so much of it in the air. This is magnified by abundant Jupiter in the opposite sign of Capricorn. Family, duty, work and other responsibilities pin us down and we may feel out of sorts without really knowing why. Try and get some clarity on the situation if you can. Spend some time in or near water. Write poems, hug babies and kittens, take your mom out for dinner.

The New Moon on the 2nd and 3rd is in Cancer with Ceres and Venus. This is huge feminine energy.
