Crescent City , CA
Greetings dear ones,
As you are well aware by now, things are changing at a
rapid rate. People around you may be acting in
unpredictable ways: dying their hair orange, running off
to Italy, quitting their secure jobs, adopting children
or abandoning their own; starting businesses and
otherwise doing things they have always wanted to do but
never had the courage to do. Perhaps you are doing the
same!
Sometimes this behavior stems from deep and recent loss.
There’s the sense that there’s nothing left to lose, so
why not? For others, personal change comes not from loss
but from gain. There’s a sense of receiving a gift, a
wonderful second chance to make life full and
meaningful. Whatever it is for you, know that by the end
of August the energy will change and you might be left
with your new pink hair and wondering what on earth got
into you. So… here’s a little tip. By all means
do
something different.
Get away, write a short story, play a song or voice your
poem at your local open mike, or seduce the person of
your dreams. Let whatever you do be either short term –
some release of pressure you can live with long after
the act is done; or be the beginning steps of some long
term project you’re totally happy with and want to
manifest.
All this
vibrancy and change
is coming from four celestial bodies, two of which
you’ve read a great deal about in this column. The
planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto. Both
Jupiter, the planet of abundance, and Uranus the planet
of change and innovation, are in fiery Aries for the
first time in 12 and 84 years respectively.
Let’s try a visual here: imagine a T junction where
three roads connect. At this T junction four vehicles
are waiting to go forward. Two are together (Jupiter and
Uranus) directly opposite one (Saturn), while the most
powerful and slowest vehicle of all (Pluto) is on the
other road. Let’s call it a cosmic traffic jam. Luckily
nothing collides thanks to the vastness of space, but
the pressure exerted by this positioning is enormous. It
is amazing we all chose to be players in the midst of
this cosmic traffic jam, and wonder what each of us
brings to the crossroads. So what can you do about all
this? As a wise Aquarian friend says:
“Slow
down, tune in, and pay attention.”
Advice, by the way, others have echoed. Can you do it?
I’m trying.
At the risk of being redundant I shall repeat some of
the information I’ve shared with you before to remind
you of the magnitude of these times.
Evidence of these planets together is found in earth
changes such as volcanoes, earthquakes, wind storms; new
technologies; widespread use of solar and nuclear power
along with innovative energy products; major
breakthroughs in the use of the internet including
sabotage and crime; more militancy in fundamental
groups; increased military action and boldness;
increased lawlessness and a powerful sense of
individualization; contact with extraterrestrials; and a
general sense of revolution, evolution and change.
Uranus’ last stay in Aries was between 1927 and 1935.
The years both preceding and following this innovative,
radical energy were fraught with change, new invention
and radical doctrine including the widespread use of
television and radio, Roosevelt’s New Deal and Hitler’s
rise to power. Uranus leaves Aries in August
retrograding back into Pisces until March 2011.
Jupiter was last in Aries in 1999. Think back to what
that time meant for you. Jupiter will be in Aries until
early September of this year only and will spend all of
2011 in the first sign of the zodiac. Coupled with bold
Uranus, Jupiter in Aries encourages you to think and act
for yourself… to boldly go where you have never gone
before. It’s a laissez faire quality or a devil may care
approach to life where you want to do what you want to
do and be damned the rest! There’s a new billboard up in
our valley. It reads: “Say No to Commitment”. That’s
these times in a nutshell.
You are an individual and this energy will be unique to
you. Find the early degrees of Aries in your chart so
you can see what areas of your life will receive this
powerful cutting of the umbilical cord.
Jupiter will move back into Pisces September 8th cooling
fiery urges until re-emerging in the sign of new birth
(Aries) in late January 2011.
And there’s more! Powerful Pluto gets in on the cosmic
act marking August as a critical month. Pluto squares
Jupiter August 3rd and again next February 25th. Pluto
and Jupiter already entered into this dance when they
first connected with each other this past July 24th.
This is astrobabble for
“big
transformation”.
You can see that the strong, individualistic Aries
energy is triggered by Pluto’s urge to evolve. You’ll
notice this personally as you become stronger, more
capable and more ready to set boundaries. In some cases,
your tolerance for long-term difficult situations or
people will run out, in others you’ll disengage – things
just won’t matter that much anymore and you’ll feel
freer, more empowered to do what feels best to you. The
cardinal axis (cardinal points of the tropical zodiac)
of what I like to call the world chart, is being
activated and on an international level world
governments shift political power positions. A perfect
example is the USA and South Korea putting on a military
exercise in full view of North Korea. This is a big
(Jupiter) military (Aries) display of power (Pluto).
Pluto also governs
secrets
and all matters hidden. The recent expose’ of military
secrets on Wikileaks (even the presence of Wikileaks
itself) is classic Pluto. Pluto digs up and reveals what
is hidden. More secrets about government and corporate
dealings will be exposed over time.
Another view on Pluto, and an important one, is that
Pluto
regenerates
whatever it touches. Much as younger 500 year-old
redwoods grow against the giant stumps of their
slaughtered 2000 year-old kin in Northern California
forests, so too can new growth emerge from the mistakes
and greed of the past. Capricorn is an earth sign and is
related to the management and use of natural resources.
I hold great hope that over the next several years our
conscious awareness of how to manage, and more carefully
cherish our natural resources, will grow.

Redwoods reemerging
Pluto in Capricorn also corresponds to hidden treasures
in the form of antiques. Old farming or medical
equipment, business documents, old contracts and mineral
rights are just a few of the objects that have value.
There is wealth in them thar' basements and attics!
Pluto brings hidden treasures up from the depths and
Capricorn is all about history. Don't be surprised if
you find some interesting secrets in your family closets
as well as a lot of trash. Yea, what to do about that
trash? Another Pluto question that will likely be raised
over the next few years. The rule of thumb remains -
reduce, renew, recycle.
Further in the cosmic news, big boy Saturn who is
associated with rules, regulations, government and
myriad other things, also squares Pluto from his new
position in Libra. This further stresses the cardinal
axis creating incredible tension. There is
pressure to rebalance inequities and to take personal
responsibility for our carelessness, waste and
indulgence.
Tony Hayward, once CEO of BP who “wants his life back,”
is a case in point.
Hayward’s disregard of nature and his nonchalant role in
the whole dirty, greedy, dangerous affair put everyone
at risk. This is the kind of behavior these planetary
moves are designed to expose. But then he was also seen
on the sea, yachting, reconnecting perhaps with the
ocean? Now an American has his position and we are
taking care of our land. With Virgo and Libra energy
present, on the heels of the Cancer/Capricorn eclipses,
this is no surprise. Order, cooperation, home and
structure.
Meanwhile, Jupiter and Uranus face off against Saturn.
Whew!
So Saturn is saying – “be committed and do the right
thing, keep the rules.” And Uranus is saying – “are you
nuts! The rules are broken and don’t make sense. I’m
outta’ here! ” Is it any wonder that you feel a little
torn at times!
This column will look more fully at these cosmic moves.
It also provides a two month astrological report you can
use for both your personal and your business planning.

This report also covers important celestial events like
the
upcoming communicator-Mercury retrograde period
which
brings back events and/or people from the past; and
indicates caution with big purchases and all deals,
contracts and travel plans. Active Mars presses against
the stone wall that is Saturn putting plans on hold as
you develop and refine them. You’ll find what these
times mean for you in the sunscope section. In a
nutshell, the planets in our solar system are placed in
angles of tension with one another, creating ripples for
us here on Earth. You will learn what this looks like
and how to make the best use of what could be tense
times.
As always, I want to thank the wonderful astrological
tools out there that make this column possible: The
American Ephemeris by Michelsen and Pottenger, Solar
Fire, The Mountain Astrologer magazine, and Georgia
Stathis’ Starcycles Calendar. I especially want to thank
my friend and fellow astrologer Cassandra Leoncini whose chats and insights
have been invaluable. Big thanks also to my writing
buddy Marla for her keen eyes; and to the Aquarian,
Taurus, Leo; and very most recently - Libra folk, who shared their wisdom
so wonderfully.
August
The month opens on the heels of summer’s eclipse. Both
the eclipse on June 26th and the one on July 11th have
far reaching consequences. We won’t see the final
results of these cosmic openings until September and
October. I have even seen eclipses activate a full year
later.

The
June 26th eclipse occurred at a Full Moon in Capricorn
and brought up issues related to home, economics, food
and basic shelter. It is very important that you have
some way of storing food and water. I do not want to be
an alarmist and I so hope I’m wrong, but the long warned
of issues associated with global warming are here. With
a little bit of planning and canning you can provide a
little padding for yourself and your family. The extreme
weather we’re experiencing is likely to take its toll on
food production and you need to make sure you have
supplies on hand.
Having plenty of water stored is an excellent idea also.
Wounded Chiron is in watery Pisces as the month opens
focusing attention on all water,
especially on the oil slick disaster in the Gulf. And
now the Kalamazoo River in Michigan is full of spilled
oil. Chiron will reenter the last degrees of Aquarius
before the month is out shifting our focus back to human
crises. But, Chiron will re-enter Pisces early next year
redirecting our attention back to the oceans and how
vital they are to life here on earth.

RUTH LAKE
The month of August begins with the confident
fiery
energy of Leo.
Until August 22nd Leo’s energy invites you to bring out
your inner kid to play. Life can be so serious and Leo
understands the importance of play. You don’t have to
turn into a party animal but you can at least try! For
all the playfulness, August is a busy month and Leo
reminds you to enjoy yourself.
The
sign of the lion
is
much misunderstood. Leo is the sign of courage, loyalty
and creativity – traits much needed on planet Earth.
There are two kinds of lions – the noisy big cats and
the quiet kitties. It’s often amusing to note that the
smaller in stature the Leo person is the noisier he or
she tends to be! There is always something striking
about a Leo’s head. Leo rules the hair and your Leo
might have a full striking mane or no hair at all. Leo
also rules the lower back and many a Leo has struggled
with lower back pain, oftentimes for no known reason.
Remember, Leo is ruled by the Sun and the Earth retreats
from the Sun every night as we rotate around it so Leos
aren’t always “on”. They need to turn down their lamps
on a regular basis and retreat. Their retreat usually
leads to a grand entrance sometime later when they
emerge with renewed zest. They typically have tremendous
reserves of energy and can keep up the pace long after
the more mutable types like Gemini and Pisces have
fallen by the wayside. You’ll find Leos in education,
center stage in theaters and in art galleries; or
quietly radiating their incredible light in doctors’
offices or other humble places where their gift of
warmth lends hope to others who are suffering.
You’ve all heard stories about, or probably even met,
“terrible” Leos;
those Leos whose huge insecurities make them loud and
demanding. Thankfully
these
poor folk are far and few between
and
are Leo’s shadow. Leo is ruled by the Sun and as such
requires respect and homage. Most Leos know this comes
from their own personal integrity while the loud Leos
demand it without personal effort. If you have a Leo in
your life, then consider yourself lucky. These warm,
generous, loyal folk will love you forever and put up
with your nonsense if you will just appreciate them.
Back to the cosmic news for August and September:
there’s
a lot
of Libra energy
over this period of time also. Libra is interested in
balance and harmony. It can also have a hard time making
decisions and often times situations involves more than
one person, emphasizing relationship and consideration
of others throughout this period of time. Read more
about Libra further in the column.
In
August, the first week is not easy.
You could press yourself against a brick wall trying to
exert your will, bursting free in impulsive moves you
might regret, or you can trust the wisdom of nature and
just let things be.
Here’s a play by play:
August 1st the moon is in fiery Aries encouraging
activity but when the waning moon enters Taurus on the
2nd you are invited to slow down. Despite the prevalent
fire energy, earth energy centers you in practical tasks
as the month opens. It’s a good time to organize and
clean up. Communicator Mercury is in critical Virgo
helping you
clear
out clutter
and
care for your bank books and pets. It’s not a good time
to begin anything. The energy feels slow and ponderous.
Some might like this slower pace while others are
frustrated. Active Mars is squashed against stern Saturn
and square powerful Pluto - you may want to do your own
thing, but you can’t. Someone or something is blocking
your way preventing your progress.
August 3rd Jupiter squares Pluto – it could be time to
change your belief system.
Is what you think really true and does it help you? It
could be time to address your underlying core beliefs
and purge those which no longer serve you. Watch for
political debate and public or personal tirades at this
time.
POST
ADDED AUGUST 5, 2010
According to NASA, a solar flare left the earth August
1st and connected with our electromagnetic field August
3rd. This could feel disruptive or discombobulating.
Alternating periods of rest with physical activity can
help you mentally and physically recalibrate.
Late on August 6th lovely Venus enters her home sign of
gracious Libra at the same time Mars squeaks away from
his prison like a small boy running away from a bossy
older sibling. The
energy lifts and paths clear.
You can move freely again.
August 7th and 8th Venus, who rules all matters related
to love, the heart and finances, opposes Uranus and
Jupiter and conjuncts Saturn. What a
topsy-turvy time for romance and business
this
is! Watch out for over-spending. Relationships begin one
day and end the next, while markets are up and down just
as quickly. Don’t try and press relationship issues now…
let this energy pass, which it will within a few days.
August 9th is an interesting day with a lot of stuff
going on, least of which is a
New
Moon at 17°24´ Leo.
This
is a super moon, meaning it is both syzygy and perigee
(conjunct the Sun and close to earth) so it exerts
greater gravitational pull than usual on earth’s
beautiful body.
This Leo New Moon is
a
wonderful time to begin creative projects.
It also encourages a creative, loyal, courageous
approach with whatever you do. It’s time to improve your
quality of leadership and to offer your gifts to the
people in your life. See if you can find the open
hearted Leo generosity in you. It is much needed and
will pay you back richly over time.
At this New Moon, which is a beginning as all New Moons
are, beautiful Venus ..
