Greetings fellow earthlings,
Are you ready for a shift? Get ready because December is full of significant cosmic moves including Mercury retrograde, Winter solstice, Mars’s entry into Scorpio, and Saturn’s move out of happy Sagittarius into its home sign of Capricorn.
Apart from Mercury’s retrograde, the month is full of vim and vigor, replete with the fiery energy of optimistic Sagittarius. Sagittarius seeks the big picture and is always interested in truth. Sagittarians everywhere will soon feel relief when stern Saturn leaves their sign and enters Capricorn very early in the morning on December 20th; just before winter solstice. In the meantime, our long-term visions are important and well worth the time (Saturn) exploring (Sagittarius). However, problems with pesky details can get in the way thanks to Mercury retrograde.
I’ve already experienced some doozies in the Mercury shadow period including making dumb (and expensive) shipping choices and working with someone whose unconscious messed with our schedule. No matter what the conscious mind says, the unconscious runs the show. As Mercury retrogrades it allows the unconscious to intrude, quite obviously sometimes, into our daily lives. Pay particular attention to Mercury’s retrograde period: early December 4th until just after winter solstice on December 21st. This is not good news for holiday shopping, alas, as there may be problems and holdups with purchases, especially electronic ones. Be mindful of scams during this time also.
Though Mercury retrograde periods are confusing, and error abounds, they are excellent times to reset and recalibrate your life. Instead of a mad holiday dash you might linger over coffee with a friend; walk along the river; spend time in study or prayer; make art; and play with your kids. In other words, pursue things that have genuine meaning. It really was a delight to talk to my old friend after all this time.
Here’s the play-by-play for the month:
December begins with energy of a waxing Moon. Mars pulls away from an opposition with crazy Uranus suggesting new windows are open (hopefully this does not include random violence).
On the 2nd, Mercury stations and things begin to get a little fuzzy. Venus, in happy go-lucky Sadge, opposes the rapidly fattening chatty Gemini Moon and adventure beckons. If you can, do something fun today.
The Gemini Full Moon takes place early on December 3rd. The Gemini/Sadge opposition highlights the dualism of our existence on the Earth plane. There are any number of truths and opinions, possibilities and choices. It’s easy to become conflicted and indecisive over just about anything. Recognize that your state of mind is fleeting and will pass. Beyond the yes and no, the black and white, is the wide-open expanse of unified consciousness. I’ll meet you there. Sorry, couldn’t resist that.
The source of suffering is ignorance, said the Buddha. Educate yourself. Free your mind from mental slavery. Find your place in the flow of life, no matter how fast or slow that river of time is.
At this Full Moon and over the next few days, Mercury connects with Saturn at the Galactic Center. You’re invited to take a good long look at where it is you’re going. Personal truth and vision is important, and you can learn a lot when you open your mind, heart and spirit. Take a moment to expose yourself to new information during this period. International affairs predominate the news and we must be careful as a country that we align with our Highest Potential and honor are our hard-won Individual and collective freedoms. It’s personal to you and personal to the other beings we share this gorgeous blue globe with. Hard truths need to be faced and the sooner we can do that the better off we are. This will make sense in terms of economics and sustainability says Jupiter in Scorpio.
Mercury retrogrades on December 4th as the Moon opposes stern Saturn, sextiles change-agent Uranus and trines active Mars. Anything can happen. Enlightenment may occur! Though you may be incredibly enthused remember Mercury is now retrograde and some of the details may not be accurate.
The 5th and 6th, Mercury and Saturn are conjunct, and Mars, Chiron and Uranus are involved. Pay close attention to the messages you receive. Write stuff down. Something definitive is going on that may have long-term consequences.
Very early on the 9th, active Mars leaves diplomatic Libra for steamy Scorpio. This is a major move and you may feel a surge of energy as Mars moves freely in this regenerative sign. Mars is the ancient ruling planet for Scorpio and will spend time traveling with Jupiter expanding and activating your deepest desires and drives. Oh my…
Scorpio embodies the Great Mystery and with both Mars and Jupiter there the tour is on. Go on the mystery ride if you dare. Look back to December 2005 – Mars and Jupiter were opposite each other then. What was going on for you?
Sex, taxes, lawsuits, male revenge, and so on are popular topics at this time. Discussion related to gun violence, and the history and philosophy of war occur. Zimbabwe celebrates the end of four decades of Robert Mugabe dictatorship. Let’s pray that the powerful regenerative energy of Mars and Jupiter together in Scorpio creates a visionary home for all beings in and around Zimbabwe.
The 12th and 13th the Moon opposes Uranus and then conjuncts Mars indicating a sudden turn in direction. Seize opportunity but don’t be rash. On the 14th retrograde Mercury meets Venus and the Moon connects with Jupiter. Old love (eros/agape) may appear. Adventures abound, and emotions run deep. On the 16th the Sun trines with erratic Uranus and Venus follows suit. There’s a strong desire for change and freedom and some folks may exhibit bizarre behavior.
The Sagittarian New Moon on the 17th features Venus, retrograde Mercury, Saturn, Black Moon Lilith; trines Uranus and squares Chiron. In other words, there’s a lot of energy around this new beginning. It’s time to change your mind, your thoughts, and your behaviors in a way that supports health and freedom for all – that means the other beings on this planet. Sagittarius is the sign of ecology and there is no doubt that our beloved Earth home needs us to behave better. What seeds can you plant now that not only simplify your relationship to the great chain of being, but that also lead to greater authenticity in your life? Can you recycle more? Cut back on eating meat? Take better care of your body? Do meaningful work? It’s up to you, but one thing is certain, seeds planted now can last a long time, perhaps as much as seven to 29 years.
The night of the 19th, stern Saturn leaves happy, opinionated Sagittarius for sensible Capricorn for the first time since 1988. What was going on in your life 29 and 30 years ago?
Over the next two and a half years Saturn will oppose all the Cancer planets in the chart of the United States and test this country. Please scroll down to read my article on The Next Four Years, written in October 2016.
The morning of the 21st the Sun enters practical Capricorn for winter solstice; the shortest day of the year. The Sun and Saturn are conjunct and new to Capricorn. It’s a momentous, grave occasion. A new sobriety enters the world. Mercury turns direct. Communications sort themselves out.
On Christmas Eve Gracious Venus quits her gypsy wandering in Sagittarius and enters sensible Capricorn to find her slippers and to get a good night’s sleep. She immediately bumps into Saturn, the Sun and Black Moon Lilith, all newly entered into Capricorn. A sense of gravitas prevails, and traditional values are extolled. Connect with family, keep the old ways alive. Remember and honor your ancestors. If it hadn’t been for them you wouldn’t be here now. Christmas Day December 25th is a somber somewhat sensitive occasion. The Moon is tender in gentle Pisces, and conjuncts wounded healer Chiron. Perhaps you might remember those less fortunate by including them in your Holy Day. It’s a good day for sensible pursuits and honoring the past.
Do something new or begin something on Boxing Day, the 26th, with the Aries Moon. Seize the opportunity on the 27th when the Moon meets with Uranus. The 28th and 29th the Moon opposes Mars and Jupiter. Indulgence and over-doing could do you in. Go for moderate walks. Say no to second helpings and family drama.
New Year’s Eve is celebrated with a hyper Gemini Moon. There are plenty of friends to see and news to share. Mars and Jupiter connect in steamy Scorpio. Libidos are good to go!
I think we all agree, 2017 has been quite the year. 2018 begins tomorrow with a full Cancer Moon. We overflow with love. The eclipse and 2017 opened our hearts. We made it! Time to celebrate.
Thanks for reading and blessings on your year.
