Earthquake 2004
By Dulce Bell-Bulley
On December 26th 2004 at just before one in the morning, an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, erupted off the west coast of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia. It was the largest earthquake in 40 years. It was caused by a release of energy when the India plate pressed under the Burma plate creating a rupture in the earth’s crust 1000 km long by 100 km wide. It went on to trigger not only massive waves called tsunamis, but 24 other earthquakes, or aftershocks, that day alone. The following day 12 more earthquakes followed, and they keep coming. Scientists predict that the aftershock from the initial quake could last for months, if not years.
An astrological chart of the exact day, time and location of this first release of energy shows an exact opposition between Saturn and Chiron; an enormous Full Moon in exact trine to Uranus, the great Awakener, and in an awkward angle with Mars, who in turn squares Uranus. This is a recipe for immediate and sudden action.
It has long been known that the Moon affects ocean tides. As the New and Full Moons bring the Sun and Moon into alignment they have a particularly strong influence on the Earth. The Moon constantly tugs at our planet but is only able to manipulate Earth’s fluids: her oceans, her molten inner core, and the watery bodies of the creatures on her surface. Ask any hospital emergency room about the effects of a Full Moon on people. They’ll support the fact that it definitely exists!
Studying the astrology of December back in November, I saw that the 26th would be a painful day filled with fear. Cosmic indicators showed that flaws in structure would be revealed. As the Moon and Saturn were in Cancer, opposing Saturn and the Sun in Capricorn, I predicted that flaws in family structure would be evident. Certainly as people died and homes were lost, family structure died with them, but this event was physically bigger than that.
At the time of the earthquake the Moon was connected tightly with both Mars and Uranus. In most accidents and disasters Uranus and Mars play a role. Uranus is a planet of unexpected surprise and change, and when triggered by the quick impulse of Mars, can cause great disruption. The Earth, already pulled by the opposition of the Sun and Moon over its watery bodies, and weakened by the sustained and steady opposition between Saturn (structure) and Chiron (flaws), could not tolerate the extra stress, and thus the earthquake.
This Saturn/Chiron opposition has been in effect since September 2003 and maybe behind the many hurricane and typhoon related disasters last year, including the earthquake that left 30 000 dead in Bam, Iran Dec 26, 2003. The opposition continues through this February, making our Earth vulnerable for a little while longer. As Earth’s inhabitants we’re subject to the same cosmic stresses and may experience teeth, bone and joint aches, and skin conditions during this time.
The devastation caused by the earthquake has completely shattered the infra structure of the communities it affected, hampering relief efforts. By the New Moon January 10th (another opportunity for geological stress) Mercury and Venus will join the Sun, Moon and Chiron in Capricorn and bring a sense of order and efficiency to the relief effort. As a home loving Cancer country, the USA reaches out to help. Now with retired Presidents Bush and Clinton working together to make this possible, true government and leadership is seen. This is Capricorn energy at work, and its best. In the midst of devastation we come to a true appreciation of this Earth we call home.
