Edwards and Kerry

By Dulce Bell-Bulley

In light of the recent Democratic Vice President nominations I thought it would be interesting to look at John Edwards’ chart. Having done that, I was struck by its many similarities to John Kerry’s. John Kerry and John Edwards meet each other on so many astrological points they could be cosmic brothers.

The two Johns connect through strong Gemini energy, the sign of the Twins. They also have powerful oppositions indicating that, used at its best, they can see each other and use each other as bounce boards despite the many similarities between them. These two gentlemen share a Gemini Moon and Mars, two very instinctual planets, and they also bring two other Gemini planets each to the mix. I’ll explain which ones in a moment but first we must understand Gemini in order to understand where these two men meet.

Gemini energy is quick and alert and its purpose is to gather information, synthesize it and disseminate it thereby doing away with ignorance. Gemini is androgynous, unbiased, versatile and logical. Gemini’s ruler is Mercury, also known as Hermes. In mythology Mercury’s roles are many from trickster and thief, to magician, messenger and Thoth – an Egyptian God whose powerful prayers were able to raise the dead. For the past several years Geminis everywhere have been undergoing radical transformation as Pluto has opposed their sign. The result of this opposition has been a regeneration towards the emergence of truth in communication. Gemini has had to focus and grow up. The archetype has had to shift from selfish trickster to discriminating messenger.

The two Johns share the following Gemini energy: instinctive, feminine (Moon), and masculine, driving, and aggressive (Mars). John Kerry adds structure, discipline, endurance and restraint in communication (Saturn); and with Uranus in Gemini his ideas are futuristic, humanistic, non-conforming and unusual. John Edwards is a Gemini and brings the light of his Gemini Sun to his career and reputation. Jupiter is in its fall in Gemini in Edwards’ chart indicating he could have much superficial knowledge but no great depth. However, this placement imbues him with quickness and a very sharp mind. With his Moon, Mars, and Sun in Gemini in high placement in his chart he wants to be seen and heard and he is exceptionally well liked.

Mercury, the ruler of this Gemini connection is found in each of the John’s charts - in opposition to each other. Kerry’s Mercury is in Capricorn. Edwards’ Mercury is in Cancer. Both of these are cardinal or leadership signs. Kerry is the "father" – he sees things practically. He figures out the usefulness of situations and information and is very straightforward about it as his Mercury is in the direct first house. Edwards on the other hand, is the "mother." His intellect is more feeling and sensing in nature. He is very aware of other people because of this and especially so as his Mercury is in the 10th house of his profession. Though they connect mentally on so many levels the two Johns are able to view the same situation from different perspectives adding great strength to decision making because of this.

Not only do the Johns have opposing Mercury’s but also their Suns (will) oppose each other as do their north nodes (pathway), and their Venus (love, money and aesthetics). Each of these oppositions are within a few degrees of each other. These men are in essence, mirrors for each other.

John Edwards values inspired partnership (Saturn conjunct Neptune in Libra in the 2nd house). John Kerry provides this for Edwards with Neptune at the top of his (Kerry’s) chart. Kerry is the visionary in this relationship. As a truth seeking Sagittarian he has emerged from a recent powerful transit with Pluto determination to win the race. He is meant to be the leader. His north node in Leo conjunct Pluto suggests that he take power and use it well, from the heart.

Edwards’ north node is exactly opposite Kerry’s. His is in Aquarius. His path is to find his role amongst the many. Yet in the creative 5th house, his purpose is entertaining and expressive. Very fitting for Edwards’ and if it weren’t for service oriented Virgo on his ascendant I would be concerned that he would seek fame for fame’s sake.

The top of Kerry’s chart is 21° Virgo which conjuncts Edwards’ ascendant at 20° Virgo. These are men who seek the Virgo ideals of service and perfection in their work and presentation. Their Suns (dynamic expression of will) exactly oppose each other. Kerry sees the broad vision (Sagittarius) – the international picture - while Edwards keeps an eye on the neighborhood (Gemini). These two men are mirrors for each other and are brothers in a sense. They are rulers in the age of information. Virgo, Sagittarius and Gemini are mutable signs. Mutable signs are agents for change. Mutable energy shifts the seasons, from fall to winter and winter to spring. These men, if elected, will usher in change to this country.
