Suicide

By Dulce Bell-Bulley

Looking for suggestions for the column I learned that the obituaries showed four Mesa County residents committed suicide in the last two weeks. That shocked me. Lots of things have been shocking me. What could possibly be said about suicides, mudslides and tsunamis that they haven’t already said, so loud and clear, about themselves. They leave us reeling, waltzing out of time, hopping on one foot.

Things change and change is not necessarily easy. At times the wounds in life are so much a part of who we are that we cannot see through them. We don’t even know that they are there.

Fish raised in a tank, with a glass barrier confining them to one half, will continue to stay in their corner long after the barrier is removed. They stay in half the tank because they knocked their heads on the barrier, learning that it was there.

Behavior is often learned for very good reasons. But what happens when the need for the behavior is gone because the barrier is lifted? Many people feel that they are trapped, but don’t know that at sometime, somehow, the barrier has been removed.

When we look at life from an astrological perspective we see that currently there is tremendous cosmic pressure and stress on the earth and her inhabitants. This stress is the lifting of barriers. Much as a bandage holds a wound together to heal it, there comes a time when the bandage must be lifted away. Being wounded means that there comes a time to heal. This is reflected by the presence of the asteroid Chiron. He represents the wounded healer archetype. His job is to point out the places that hurt; to encourage us to drop our attachment to that pain; and to synthesize our knowledge for our healing.

Chiron’s schedule has been full since September 2003 and he’s appeared at most of the recent New and Full Moons. His presence indicates that we’re at a point in time where we have to make the leap from what we’ve been, to what we are becoming.

Transiting Pluto will soon reach the Galactic center. I know it sounds like a Star Trek episode, but it’s true. This phenomenal event, coming 2007, will transform the way we see the world. We may have to live in a new way at that time, doing new things and thus we are being asked to make our changes now. We’re being encouraged to leave behind our reasons, our excuses, our pains and wounds, in preparation for this incredible time.

2005 is a year of transition, a year of changes, both small and large. Nobody needs to be reminded that these changes are long overdue. We know so much yet we have been operating with archaic standards. Not anymore. The barrier is lifting. The glass wall that divides us from our true purpose is gone. Old behaviors are no longer necessary.

The dark side of life, the painful, icky side where death lurks, often wants a sacrifice. This is our opportunity to offer up our pain, our limitations and all the old rejections - we don’t need them anymore. As for suicides, mudslides and tsunamis, we can count them as cruel gifts because they remind us of life’s fragility. It’s what we will do with that reminder that counts the most.

Take care out there,

Dulce
