December is not the easiest month with its pressure to buy and consume. Thank goodness we have the uplifting energy of fiery Sagittarius to see us all the way to Winter Solstice on December 21st. After that we succumb to the serious tone of Capricorn which will take us into 2024 and the aridity of cold January, at least where I live here in the 38 parallel north.
So why is December so tough? Well, it’s a cold time of year, though some folks really like that. In my neck of the woods, temperatures are already well below zero. Here in the USA, we start overeating at Thanksgiving in late November and the gorging doesn’t quit until after Christmas. It’s an expensive time and for those who have anxieties and losses, time alone at Christmas is hard. Many folks experience seasonal affective disorder with the short days and lack of light. Astrologically speaking, this December is just fine. We do have to contend with Mercury retrograde which begins mid-month and ends at the end of the year.
The real issue is the sense that 2024 is the beginning of something we’ve never seen before. Pluto dances into Aquarius, again, and two other slow-moving planets come to the end of the signs they’re traversing. This is not a common occurrence. Pluto moves into Aquarius with the Sun! on January 20, 2024. It’s as if a national leader declares himself. Certainly, a worldwide authority makes itself known.
We can see and feel the pending changes all around us. In the USA, we face a national election with certain obnoxious players set to stir the pot, while our current President is an octogenarian with a mixed reputation. And on the international stage there are too many painful wars and struggles to list. We’re dealing with the fallout of our lifestyle as seen in the changing climate though most folks live as if the end will never come.
Pluto’s ingress into Aquarius puts us all in the same boat. We become scientists and protestors. We become leaders and innovators. The imaginary lines between us dissolve as we all face the same issues because we all live on the same planet.
So, here’s how December rolls along before the big shift that is 2024 reaches us:
The month opens with a sense of possibility. For the first three days of December, the Leo Moon connects favorably with the Sun and Mars traveling in Sagittarius and Chiron in Aries. This is a lot of fire and fire is inspirational. The archer teaches us that a positive mental attitude goes a long way. Sagittarius connects us with the ability to envision. Here is your chance to see your plan for your life. Let yourself step waaaay back from your life in order to see it and to understand what you’re doing with it. Hope, vision, belief and ideas — imagine those underneath your Christmas tree.
Mercury is freshly in Capricorn moving into the most pragmatic sign just as December begins. Mercury will retrograde in Capricorn in the middle of the month turning direct at the end of the year. But until that time, you have the all clear to take care of business. Mercury retrograde is perfect for reflection so how fortuitous it is that we have an opportunity to reflect on the year we’ve just been through. It’s a chance to look in the rearview mirror. But, as my brother-in-law taught me, only look in the rearview mirror ten percent of the time. That’s a good rule of thumb.
December 4th is a significant energy shift day when Venus leaves her home sign of Libra for intense Scorpio. Venus will stay in Scorpio until the end of the year traversing over recent eclipse points possibly bringing back the passion and/or jealousy of that time. Over the next few days, Venus forms a harmonious relationship with stern Saturn bringing a measure of both peace and finality.
December 5th is a good day for forgiveness when the waning Virgo Moon opposes gentle Neptune.
December 7th could be a little tender when the Libra Moon opposes wounded Chiron. Seek the support of loving people.
The 8th is a good day to seek wisdom when Mercury and Jupiter trine. Possible positive outcomes on legal matters.
On the 9th, intense feelings are likely. It’s a good day to understand yourself at a deep level when the Moon connects with Venus, and both oppose Jupiter.
December 10th, it’s easy to overindulge, both in intense feelings or over the top shopping as Venus forms a tight opposition with Jupiter.
December 11th and 12th, the waning Moon enters Sagittarius preparing for the coming New Moon. With connections to Chiron, these days can intuitively inform you so keep your inner ear open.
December 12th at 3:45 pm MT, the Sagittarian New Moon invites your vision for your life. The New Moon and Sun square dreamy Neptune, the guardian of souls. Light a candle, feel reverence for the mystery within which you live. Lord knows, we need as much help as we can get. The New Moon forms an awkward angle with change-agent Uranus – who knows what changes for the better this New Moon can bring into your life. Inspiration is yours, be sure to use it. Reject the myth of isolation by feeling into the spiritual support that surrounds you. Be clear about your truth. Acknowledge your helpers. Say yes to an intentional and meaningful life.
Prepare to reflect as Mercury turns retrograde on the 14th letting the next few weeks take you into a more interior space. This is a good opportunity to focus on what you need to do. Family and business matters predominate.
On the 15th, the Moon meets up with Pluto and allows you to feel the depth of things.
Logic and reason prevail over the next few days as the Moon sails through analytical Aquarius. The 17th may feel especially heavy, or conversely – very committed, as the Moon connects with Saturn.
The 18th through the 19th are good days for feeling your way through relationship. The Pisces Moon connects with gentle Venus brooding in Scorpio and lands gently against Neptune’s side. Relaxation is the goal!
On the 20th the Moon in Aries meets with Chiron and helps you find new ground. Remember, the cosmic purpose of this time is a re-visioning of your life. Ask the question, who am I?
Watch for surprises and changes the 20th and 21st when Venus opposes Uranus. Love and ethical matters look a little slippery. Don’t hold too tight.
The evening of the 21st and the Sun meets the Galactic Center for one final message before slipping quietly into the earth of Capricorn. It’s a good time for you to record your vision and create practical steps that outline and encourage your goal.
The Sun immediately meets Mercury who has moved back to the beginning of Capricorn. Are there some details you forgot? It’s okay to go through things again. The earthy Taurus Moon guides you through the next few days. There may be a feeling of fullness of the 22nd when the Moon connects with Jupiter. Don’t overspend!
It seems like money and love matters just don’t go away. The Moon opposes Venus on the 23rd. You may have mixed feelings.
Mercury re-enters Sagittarius and connects with the Galactic Center on the 23rd. We’re really getting the message to listen up.
Keep listening through the 24th (and beyond, of course) as Mercury brings ideas and inspiration your way.
Christmas Day and the Gemini Moon makes it a jolly old time. It’s good to connect with others. Sacred blessings of the season to you all!
Boxing Day (12/26) at sunset lights up a huge Cancer Full Moon. Emotions may really be flowing! With a trine to Jupiter and a Mercury Mars conjunction hurt words may be said. But then again, there could be some truth to them. Saturn is watching with a trine to the Moon and good connections with the Sun indicating that whatever occurs may be helpful in the long term. Meanwhile, family interactions may be a tad intense. Self-care is key. If you like, get in a hot Epsom salt bath and get to bed early.
December 27th could be somewhat feisty as chatty Mercury meets fiery Mars. Oh dear. Please don’t say anything you’ll regret. On the other hand, this is a great combo for getting to the heart of the matter in a roundabout way. Long conversations may yield great truths.
December 28th and deep truths keep emerging! The Moon at the tail end of Cancer meets Pluto at the tail end of Capricorn. What is coming to an end?
Spirits lift on the 29th as Venus enters buoyant Sagittarius and meets the Moon traveling in happy Leo. Seems all is well with the world after all.
Even though they say New Year’s resolutions don’t work, I like the energy on the 30th. There are wonderful connections between planets in fire signs that help you re-connect with the vision for your life.
The year ends on a fussy Virgo Moon. It’s time to clean up and get organized. Perhaps your New Year’s celebrations will focus on organic foods and careful analysis of your plans. Regardless of what you do, please know that you are infinitely precious. You have the right to know who you are and to commit to the vision you have for your life. After all, no matter what happens out there, it’s the in here that counts.
Thanks for reading, and please remember – you matter, we’re all connected, Earth is our home and love is our destination.
